State Municipal Solid Waste Gate Rate Trends
Chartwell Solid Waste Digest Established in 1990, the Chartwell Solid Waste Digest has evolved from a newsletter into the solid waste industry’s leading independent research service on the business of managing waste. The Chartwell Solid Waste Digest team provides an independent, third-party analysis and perspective on key solid waste market trends.

The Chartwell Solid Waste Digest is widely recognized as “the original source” on gate rates trends for both municipal solid waste and construction and demolition wastes. In 2010, the Chartwell Solid Waste Digest is offering individual state reports on municipal solid waste gate trends for the period of 2001 through 2009. These innovative, new reports provide decision makers with both an understanding of both recent and long term gate rate changes.

These individual reports represent the accumulation of nine years of research surveys. Each state’s report is available for $250.00. This report has been prepared by the Chartwell Division (formerly Chartwell Information Publishers) of The Envirobiz Group (www.envirobiz.com). It is based on research conducted since 2000 on the gate rates or tipping fees ('rates') charged by municipal sanitary landfills for municipal solid waste (MSW).
Figure 1: National Average Rate 2000 - 2011
state municipal solid waste national average 2000-2011

The national average rate is the mathematical average of all municipal sanitary landfills surveyed in the United States. Since 2000, the national average rate has risen over 11 years by an average annual increase of $0.00 per ton per year (see Figure 1). In 2011, the national average rate had reached $0.00 per ton.

The national median rate is based on being the rate that is in the center of the range from highest rate to lowest rate on a nationwide basis. Since 2000, the national median has risen over 11 years by an average annual increase of $0.00 per ton per year (see Figure 2). In 2011, the national median rate was at $0.00 per ton.

The state average rate is the mathematical average of all municipal sanitary landfills surveyed in the state. Since 2000, the state average rate has risen over 11 years by an average annual increase of $0.00 per ton per year (see Figure 3). In 2011, the national average rate had reached $0.00 per ton.

The state median rate is based on being the rate that is in the center of the range from highest rate to lowest rate on a statewide basis. Since 2000, the state median has risen over 11 years by an average annual increase of $0.00 per ton per year (see Figure 4). In 2011, the state median rate had reached $0.00 per ton.

Table 1 provides the calculated per year change in the national and state rates between 2011 and the years 2010, 2008, 2006, and 2000. The national rates are provided as a benchmark as to what is occurring on a nation wide basis. There are typically unique factors in most state such the national rates are often very different than state rates.
